September 24, 2003-First Day UP the Mountain ...my new student Taji

Dear All,
Sitting in the German Bakery in Bhagsu waiting for my food after having gotten back from the waterfall here....plain simply lovely walk (although I am really out of hspae!) and felt "that feeling" again...it poured from 9 last nite until 9 this morning amazing rainfall and then for the first time REAL sun and even saw the snow capped peaks for the first time walking up to Bhagsu. I am really NOT feeling so fit right now but sooooo pleased. I will not let anything keep me from my walking from now on. THIS is the reason I am here...Last nite I sat with friends and for the first time ate at the Japanese Restaurant. Fabulous Sushi...Here in India, in a Tibetan town, eating Japanese ;food at a table with Israeli, american, New Zealand and Holland!
Taught Taji, my newly acquired student...he actually picked me up yesterday at Nick's after going from table to table looking for a teacher......truth is, I am happy to help him but REALLY hate teaching! This guy is 25, left his family of mother and father, 2 brothers and 3 sisters in Tibet a year ago and hasn't heard a word from them since. They live on a farm and grow vegetiables and raise yaks. He spent 6 months in Lhassa learning Tibetan (he was illiterate before) and then walked 1 month across the mountains to avoid the Chinese and now studies English ALL DAY...from 8-12 he studies alone or with whatever teacher (like me) he can find and from 4-8 goes to free school. He must learn english to be able to get a job and his money is running out. He worked for a month in Manali as a cook but here no one needs a Tibetan cook!
And then, just as we were sitting together, the sun came out as if inviting me to come out and walk...and I did...it was so exhilerating getting up on the mountain paths again...and I really hope I will manage this each morning....this was a fairly short walk...once I got up to the beginning of the path it was only 45 minutes up and back...but the view was splendid today and hope the weather will start imporving each day...
Feeling quite drowsy now and will go take a nap...had wanted to actually describe the way up, but perhaps tomorrow...really tired right now...
My love...Jane
