October 9, 2003 FUNNY FAUCET STORY
Dear All,
Got a late start today but refused to go another day without the mountains. I am now sitting up at the Heena cafe where people actually walk almost 45 minutes for a cup of "real" Elite coffee at 25 rupees a cup (Elite is a the original local Israeli brand of instant coffee and really awful compared to good instant coffe-but Israelis grow up on it and so really miss it when they don't have it available)....The place is owned by an Israeli who lives here most of the year and his friends and him are Datiim (religious) and wear those large knitted head things and sit here and talk all day about Mashiach (the Messiah)...really weird...it was fun sitting with them for a little while and then continuing on my walk...but let's get back to yesterday for a minute... then we will come back to this walk.
Had a slow easy morning after a really fun day yesterday down in the "big city" of Dharamsala with Abdellah. This guy is a riot and we have a great time together.
anyway-yesterday morning I was in the shower and when I turned on the cold water the faucet came off and water started shooting out all over in a strong gush. Now my door is locked from the inside-so even if I called Ashish (and he would hear me across the wall in my bathroom which is a common wall with his kitchen)...he couldn't get in and besides, as most people would be- I was naked in the shower. So I tried my best to get the faucet back in and shut...I finally managed with much trepidation that I wouldn';t be able to (I got it just barely sitting there and expecting it to come off again and flood the whole room at any moment...But, I managed).... Last evening Ashish managed to get it closed finally but you can't imagine how much water shot out....he didn't close the main water in the guesthouse....just worked through the flood...that's the way they do things in India! but now I can't turn on the cold water as he is still missing a washer...but at least I went to sleep knowing I wouldn't drown during the night!
So, today, after a slow pleasant morning, I left for Dharamkot and am now way up on the mountain resting before I go down and it was just perfect for me. If I was able to hike this high up easily, it looks like a heavenly place to live....I'll have to settle for the town and walks up each time. It was a fabulous walk down as well and walked along a path I had not tried before and had a thoroughly lovely walk...at one point on the way up I almost gave up...it was not easy for me this time....but I am glad I continued as I saw some really beautifuly stuff along the way, despite the huffing and puffing on the way up.
I am much more relaxed today knowing my ticket can be changed whenever I feel the need and also that Chana's daughter has already made plans for a new wedding date and once the initial horror and shock were over, life does go on...as difficult as it may be sometimes.
I am already thinking of coming back here the next time and trying to figure out how I will do it. chanale gives birth in April so I couldn't leave for at least a month or 2 after that...perhaps Uruguay first? don't know. Right now, just enjoying each day as it comes and thankful for each new experience it brings....I still find myself having to pinch myself sometimes to be sure this is all real, and they feel tears of joy as I thank God for giving me the blessing of this trip.
My love to all...Jane
