October 10, 2003 Wistful Wishes and Love for Kiddies Here

Dear All,
Decided to do some exploring and check out new places in town today. Found a guest house which I also tried to check out 2 years ago on the far rode of town-not a sound to be heard, overlooking the whole valley-but they are always full-can't see a room! Their best room is 700 a month and they have several rooms with kitchens. Spoke to someone staying there who said the room is really nice-lots of sun-wooden floors (!) and comfy beds. will try to check it out another day. Also checked prices to Bby for place from Delhi $185 plus tax and I can pay with my visa if need be. And I have also decided to take the bus back to Delhi from here which will save me enough money to be able to afford a taxi with another person to Amrtistar overnight...Abdellah may go with me in a couple of weeks...
Another glorious day but will stay close to home..yesterday did my knees in a little...maybe just go up to bhagsu for a walk.
Sitting here at a coffe shop I haven't tried yet-EmiEmi...down Temple road near the Kodak place. Just as nice as sitting at "shir" in Gan Shmuel an certainly alot cheaper. Great cakes in a REAL display window, nice background music-clean checkered tableclothes with glass on top-out in sun if you like-just had gread iced coffee and a veggie burger and all for 4.5 shekels (!) and am forcing myself NOT to look at the cakes.. Practically can imagine myself sitting here opposite my good friend Edna as we so often do when we meet for coffee just to have a "heart-to-heart". I can honestly say that I am not yet homesick at all, but I imagine myself doing things here with different people and how much different the expericence would be. I wish all those I love could experience the magic of this place with me. I know it is not really India-India can wait as far as I'm concerend. Just thinking how nice it would be if I had money to whisk all my favorite people over here for a 1 month vacation all together!.

Something I wrote about in my last journal 2 years ago, but still so noticable here...is how the men LOVE the babies and little kids. At home it is usually the women who come to kootchi mootchi the little ones, but here it is always the men..of all ages...from teenagers...even little boys up to old men who are seen carrying them around, playing with them, making faces etc...and all even during a day's work...they will simply stop what they are doing or work carrying a baby in one arm. The truth is, in all the time I have been here in McLeod I heard a child cry once when his mother reprimanded him for something, and in 2 seconds all the passerbys were reprimanding HER!...children simply do not cry here!

Later the same day....
